Tony Covena has scored a very well-deserved thirteenth place in today’s Superstock 1000 FIM Cup race at MotorLand Aragon in Spain. The EAB Racing Team rider had to start from eighteenth on the grid after a difficult begin of the weekend, because of the late arrival of some vital components due to logistical problems. Despite this major challenge and despite a hard sprint to the first corner, the Dutchmen was able to score three important points aboard his EAB Racing Team Ducati 1199 Panigale R.
Covena’s team mate Fabio Massei had no luck in the race as he was forced to withdraw after technical problems. Without this problems, a top-6 or top-7 was possible. The start of the race day was very good for Massei, as he ended the morning warming-up on the EAB Racing Team Ducati 1199 Panigale R in an impressive second place. Also Covena showed a good race pace with tenth overall in that session, only a couple of tenths behind his Italian team mate.
After the first round at Aragon, both Covena and Massei are now fully focused on next weeks race at the famous TT Circuit in the north of the Netherlands, Covena’s and EAB Racing Team’s home race.
Tony Covena: “After the difficulties in the qualification I needed a good start, but unfortunately my start wasn’t that good as some riders crashed in front of me. From that moment the challenge was even bigger. At the end I’m happy with a couple of points after I lost some valuable time passing a competitor, but to be honest, after the promising warm-up, I was hoping for more. Hopefully Assen will be better. I’m looking really forward to my home race and can’t wait to Friday morning’s free practice 1.”
Fabio Massei: “In the warming-up I found a really good rhythm and a good feeling with the Ducati Panigale and although I had to start from tenth on the grid, I was confident to score good points today. Without the technical problems I think top-6 would be possible. It’s a real shame as this race was more or less a test for us and it would be great to leave Aragon with championship points. But this is racing and things like this can always happen. Hopefully we will have more luck at Assen!”
